Job Description Summary Organization's Summary Statement: Supervises daily operations of the genetically closed beef cattle herd at the Wye Research and Education Center. The program maintains a large registered purebred herd of Angus cattle and conducts both basic and applied research, as well as educational activities. Physical Demands: Ability to climb and endure extensive walking, standing, and lifting. Should be able to lift to 50 lbs. Ability to wear and work in personal protective clothing/equipment. Ability to work in extreme weather conditions. Must be available for evening, weekend, and holiday work schedules. Licenses/ Certifications: • Valid Class C (non-commercial) driver’s license • Possession of a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) (obtained within 24months of employment) • Maryland Public Agency Applicator’s Certificate (obtained within the first year of employment) • Maryland Nutrient Management Certification (obtained within two years of employment) Minimum Qualifications Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. Experience: Three (3) years of experience working with cattle for research or educational programs. One (1) year of experience leading or supervising professional staff. Other: Additional work experience as defined above may be substituted on a year for year basis for up to four (4) years of the required education. Knowledge of agricultural procedures, research protocols, and management practices. Knowledge of animal care and handling procedures. Skill in oral and written communication. Skill in the use of Microsoft Office products. Ability to interpret and apply policies, procedures, regulations, and laws. Ability to multitask while demonstrating a commitment to customer service and sensitivity to a culturally and ethnically diverse community. Additional Job Details Preferences: • B.S. or M.S. degree in Animal Husbandry or related field i.e. Animal Science, Veterinarian Science • 5 years of experience managing a beef/cattle herd • 3 years of supervisory experience Responsibilities: Under the general supervision of the Center Director, establishes objectives based on program needs and allocates workforce based on set priorities. Understands the concept of managing a genetically closed beef cattle program. Promotes and acquires genetic assets that enhance the Angus program. Instructs and trains all employees to follow the standard safe operating procedures, and all aspects of research grazing and machinery use. Basic understanding of all guidelines established by the IACUC (Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee). Organizes daily work detail with input from herd manager to maximize efficiency and awareness of staff. Relays daily work schedules to other co-workers and actively participates with work group in accomplishing daily goals. Certified in Artificial Insemination (A. I.) of beef cattle and has a basic knowledge of veterinary skills and procedures to maintain cattle wellness. Hires student interns to complement full-time workforce and to give students hands-on training. Works with researchers and Extension personnel to understand their needs and facilitates research and outreach activities. Promotes the Wye Angus genetics and annual sale throughout the year. Oversees collection, organization, and storage of cattle and crop production data. Maintains communication and cooperation with other WyeREC programs. Works with office personnel to help prepare and organize the annual Wye Angus Sale. Gives scheduled tours and presentations to visitors, cattle producers, researchers and Extension personnel. Certified and follows Beef Quality Assurance practices. Complies, on behalf of WyeREC, with necessary governmental reporting. Develop/maintains nutrient management plan. Keeps up to date on any new emerging technology or mandates in dealing with cattle management or crop production.
