Summary
The Clinical Data Abstractor (CDA) will work within the Division of Hospital Medicine at Michigan Medicine, and is responsible for collecting, analyzing and reporting clinical data elements from the electronic medical record on eligible cases as required for Michigan Medicine’s participation in the Michigan Hospital Medicine Safety Consortium (HMS), a Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan-funded Collaborative Quality Initiative (CQI). HMS is a Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and Blue Care Network funded Collaborative Quality Initiative. It is a data-driven collaborative made up of hospitals across the State of Michigan with a goal of improving the quality of care for hospitalized medical patients. The three main areas that HMS currently focuses on are: vascular access (PICCs and Midlines), antimicrobial use, and sepsis. In addition to functioning as an abstractor for HMS initiatives, we envision that this role may evolve to incorporate additional research and quality improvement related data work, in partnership with our research and clinical faculty and staff.

Responsibilities*
- Independently manage the HMS related case load for the PICC/Midline and Antimicrobial initiatives
- Report data according to established standards and deadlines. This includes screening subjects for eligibility, collecting clinical data, and completing patient follow-up records.
- Maintain appropriate records
- Co-lead Michigan Medicine PICC/Midline multi-disciplinary quality improvement work group
- Maintain, track and distribute Michigan Medicine performance in HMS, or division related, quality measures
- Facilitate the completion of Michigan Medicine’s semiannual quality improvement surveys distributed from the HMS Coordinating Center
- Attend consortium-wide meetings and multi-disciplinary meetings as a representative of Michigan Medicine, acting as a resource regarding the consortium within Michigan Medicine
- Maintain regular contact with the HMS physician champion(s) and other members of the team at Michigan Medicine
- Prepare for and be available for site audits by the HMS Coordinating Center (housed at Michigan Medicine),
- Resolve data discrepancies
- Respond to HMS Coordinating Center requests in a timely fashion
- Other duties as assigned, including possible future clinical research or quality related data and improvement work, in partnership with research and/or clinical faculty and staff.
Required Qualifications*
- Knowledge of or experience in the delivery of patient care, which is consistent with a clinically-relevant healthcare Bachelor’s degree (required)
- 3 years of clinical healthcare experience or experience in analyzing and interpreting care delivery processes, clinical outcomes and/or costs of care
- Strong computer skills including MSWord, Excel, and PowerPoint
- Ability to plan, conduct, manage, and prioritize tasks, while working independently to complete assignments
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
- Individual must be able to travel to meetings 3-4 times a year to offsite Collaborative Wide Meetings that occur in various locations across the State of Michigan
- Excellent interpersonal skills as demonstrated in oral, written, and presentation formats
- This position can be performed in a hybrid fashion, with significant opportunities for remote work in accordance with Michigan Medicine Remote Work Policy. There will be some regular expectation of working and collaborating onsite at either Arbor Lakes (HMS location), the main University Hospital (to partner with and help drive behavior change in clinical teams), and potentially North Campus Research Center (as/when the role evolves).
Desired Qualifications*
- Prior experience with clinical chart review and abstraction
- Experience with Mi-Chart or Epic is preferred
- Master’s degree in a health care field or quality
- Experience in an inpatient healthcare setting
- Working knowledge of Michigan Medicine and University of Michigan policies and procedures
Background Screening
