What are the responsibilities and job description for the Program Facilitator position at YMCA OF NEWARK?
Camp Linwood MacDonald YMCA (a branch of the YMCA of Newark & Vicinity) invites you to join our caring and committed team at our beautiful 200 acre camp in northwest New Jersey. We are seeking Seasonal Program Facilitators to organize and facilitate assigned outdoor activities for youth, family, and adult guests at the camp. Program Facilitators directly assist the Program Director in the development and administration of environmental education, camp programs, and conference group programs and are responsible to meet the high standards of quality service, visibility, and awareness of the YMCA. All activities shall be conducted in a manner consistent with established policies and procedures to enable the Association to achieve its defined goals and objectives. All staff will be required to model the YMCA core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility in their work each day. The YMCA’s recruitment process includes comprehensive background check including pre-employment drug test and criminal background check.
Program Season and Schedule:
- April – June 2023 - Possible to extend through Summer and/or Fall 2023.
- Schedule / hours vary weekly up to 40 hours per week.
- Shared dormitory style housing available. Meals when guests are served.
Summary of Essential Functions:
- Facilitate classes and activities in line with the schedule and the appropriate curriculum and procedures.
- Ensure that the program area is cleaned after use and supplies are re-stocked if necessary.
- Assist in the leadership, direction and coordination of campers, guests, and staff with other camp personnel.
- Develop and expand current curriculum offerings and procedures.
- Work directly with the Program Director to ensure proper preparation for programs.
- Establish and maintain communication with guests and staff to ensure prompt attention is paid to their concerns and needs.
- Act as an additional resource to all program staff and be available to observe the quality of program content.
- Assist in the development and implementation of curriculum that meets or exceeds the New Jersey Core Curriculum Standards, the American Camp Association, and/or other guiding/credentialing authorities.
- Assist in maintaining a clean appearance to the grounds and facilities, and the cleaning of lodging, program and dining areas as needed.
- Inspect all program equipment on a weekly basis, and ropes course on a daily basis.
- Promptly report any concerns to the supervisor.
Minimum Requirement:
- Experience and training in working with youth and/or adults in an outdoor education/recreation setting.
- Ability to communicate and work with participating groups (based on age and skill levels) and provide necessary instruction to campers and staff.
- Knowledge and ability to observe camper behavior as well as staff behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate with all levels including staff, parents, and volunteers.
- Strong customer service skills and ability to demonstrate enthusiasm and continually serve with a friendly attitude.
- Strong organizational skills, detailed orientated, and planning skills required.
- Ability to problem solve and make decisions in accordance with the implemented policies and procedures.
- First Aid/CPR/AED and Lifeguard certifications are a plus.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Flexible schedule is required.
- Willingness to work in a camp.
Physical Demand: Sufficient strength, agility, and mobility to perform essential functions in a wide variety of outdoor and possibly indoor locations.
- Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity.
- Eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate equipment and activities.
- Normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate camper activities/programs.
- Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.
- Some physical requirements of an adventure challenge position could be endurance including climbing, standing, some bending, stooping, and stretching. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to operate with daily exposure to the sun and heat and varying environmental conditions.
