What are the responsibilities and job description for the Swim Instructor position at YMCA OF NEWARK?
The YMCA of Newark and Vicinity is seeking Part Time Swim Instructors. This is a great opportunity to make a difference in the communities we serve. The YMCA’s recruitment process includes comprehensive background check and upon hire, extensive training.
Swim Instructors are required to provide direct leadership to participants in the YMCA swimming instruction program (Group/Private) that emphasizes positive self-worth, stroke development, fun, fitness, personal safety in a safe aquatic environment.
Summary of Essential Functions:
- Demonstrates and explains skills clearly to class members.
- Works with individual students within class structure to enable all students to correct faults, improve self-image and succeed at their own level.
- Reports to class in enough time to set-up and tear down all equipment and be dressed in approved attire.
- Evaluates each participant verbally and written and records on a certificate to be presented to parents at the completion of the session.
- Gives 100% attention to class participants and their safety.
- Secures a qualified substitute well in advance and provide substitute with roster and lesson plan.
- Follows YMCA policies and procedures; responds to emergency situations.
- Attends all scheduled meetings and in-service trainings.
Minimum Requirements:
- Must be at least 16 years of age.
- Required Certification: YSL, WSI or YASA (Y Aquatic Safety Assistant) preferred.
- Current First Aid and CPR certifications.
- Must have understanding of strokes and techniques in the assigned area of instruction.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Ability to communicate verbally to groups and individuals in and out of the pool area.
- Ability to demonstrate swimming skills appropriate to levels assigned at any given time.
Work Environment & Physical Demands:
- Sufficient strength, ability, agility and mobility to perform essential functions and to perform activities in a wide variety of indoor and possibly outdoor locations.
- Must be able to be in the pool for extended periods of time.
- Must be able to lift and assist swimmers in and out of the pool.
- Ability to hear sounds of distress in order to assist.
