The YMCA of Newark and Vicinity is seeking Part Time Lifeguards. This is a great opportunity to make a difference in the communities we serve. The YMCA’s recruitment process includes comprehensive background check and upon hire, extensive training.
Lifeguards are required to maintain safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and surrounding areas and create a safe and positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals and promotes safety in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.
Summary of Essential Functions:
- Maintains active surveillance of the pool area.
- Knows and reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures; completes related reports as required.
- Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies, and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area.
- Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the state health department code.
- Performs all rescues and survival skills.
- Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed.
- Checks the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving.
- Performs chemical testing when not guarding, as required, and takes appropriate action.
- Identifies and celebrates the successes of members and program participants.
- Attends all staff meetings and in-service trainings.
Minimum Requirements:
- Minimum age of 16.
- Certifications: Current American Red Cross or YMCA Lifeguard; Basic life support or professional rescuer CPR/AED, first aid, and emergency oxygen administration.
- Ability to maintain certification-level physical and mental readiness.
- Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with Red Cross or YMCA standards.
- Excellent human relations and customer service skills.
Work Environment & Physical Demands:
- Sufficient strength, ability, agility and mobility to perform essential functions and to perform activities in a wide variety of indoor and possibly outdoor locations.
- Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks necessary for a water rescue such as: swimming quickly, supporting adult bodyweight while swimming as far as 50 feet, removing adult bodyweight from the pool.
- Ability to remain alert, in a warm environment and with no lapses of consciousness.
- Ability to sit and stand for extended periods, including in an elevated chair.
- Ability to hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere around the zone of responsibility.
- Ability to see and observe all sections of an assigned zone or area of responsibility.
