Title: Child Nutrition Coordinator
Location: Petersburg, VA
Pay Rate: $75,000-$82,000/yr

Position Overview
The Child Nutrition Coordinator is responsible for overseeing all components of the division's nutrition program. This role ensures that meals provided meet both nutritional standards and regulatory requirements. The position involves strategic planning, daily operational oversight, compliance management, staff supervision, and budget administration to support the health and academic success of children through high-quality meal services.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage the nutrition programs in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations.
- Develop and revise operational policies and establish procedures for food preparation, sanitation, and service.
- Plan and implement healthy, well-balanced menus for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and summer feeding programs.
- Evaluate program effectiveness and ensure all food service operations meet health and safety standards.
- Coordinate public outreach and communication strategies to inform families about menus, pricing, and services.
- Set meal pricing, control portion sizes, and oversee budgeting, including tracking expenses for food, labor, and equipment.
- Hire, train, and supervise nutrition services staff while offering ongoing professional development opportunities.
- Oversee school-based health services as needed.
- Ensure timely and accurate submission of all required federal, state, and local reports.
- Perform other duties as assigned by division leadership.
- Maintain an inclusive, equitable approach in all interactions and management practices.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
- In-depth knowledge of USDA guidelines for school nutrition programs.
- Familiarity with regulations specific to the Virginia Department of Education and other relevant agencies.
- Experience with large-scale food service operations, including planning, procurement, and quality control.
- Budgeting, financial management, and cost-control expertise.
- Ability to use food service software, point-of-sale systems, and standard office applications.
- Knowledge of HACCP protocols, food safety requirements, and nutrition principles.
- Customer service orientation with the ability to respond to concerns and improve satisfaction.
- Capacity to work under pressure and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in nutrition, food service management, business administration, or a related discipline.
- At least five years of food service experience, including three years in a leadership or administrative capacity.
- Equivalent combinations of education, training, and experience may be considered.
- Completion of at least eight hours of food safety training either within five years prior to hire or within 30 days of starting.
- Must attend state-sponsored training for new school nutrition directors and maintain food safety certification every five years.
- Must complete a minimum of 12 hours of professional development annually.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with school nutrition programs regulated by the Virginia Department of Education.
- Credentials such as Registered Dietitian (RD/RDN) or School Nutrition Specialist (SNS) certification.
- ServSafe Food Manager Certification or equivalent recognized by the Virginia Department of Health.
