Job Title: School of Medicine - Director of Phase 1 Curriculum Overview: The Director of Phase 1 Curriculum is a core educational leader responsible for guiding and supporting the development and delivery of the foundational phase of the BYU School of Medicine curriculum. This role emphasizes the integration of biomedical science and early clinical instruction through student-centered, spiritually aligned, and pedagogically sound practices. The Director collaborates closely with course directors, faculty, and administrative staff to ensure a high-quality, harmonized Phase 1 learning experience that meets all LCME and institutional expectations. The Director reports to the Associate Dean of Medical Education. This position is designed for a basic scientist or medical doctor with significant experience teaching basic science content to medical students and a demonstrated commitment to innovation, teamwork, and academic excellence in undergraduate medical education. Posting End Date: September 1, 2025 *NOTE: Last day to apply is Sunday, August 31, 2025 11:59 p.m. MST Position Start Date: March 1, 2026 Required Degree: Doctoral Degree (PhD or equivalent) in a foundational biomedical science discipline (e.g., anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, biochemistry, molecular biology) or MD with similar experience. The required degree must be completed by the start date. Experience: Required: Strong record of teaching foundational/basic science content in undergraduate medical education (UME) settings. Experience designing and delivering active learning and other student-centered instructional methods Demonstrated ability to collaborate and lead within interdisciplinary academic teams Alignment with and commitment to the mission, values, and spiritual aims of Brigham Young University and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Preferred: Familiarity with integrated/system-based medical curricula and phase-based curriculum structures Skilled in appropriate use of Artificial Intetelligence (AI) in medical education delivery Understanding of competency-based education, active learning strategies, and LCME accreditation standards Experience in medical curricula development and implementation Experience mentoring faculty or leading academic initiatives Experience in university committee participation or leadership A record of scholarly contributions in medical education or biomedical science Duties/Expectations: Administrative Leadership Provide strategic oversight of all Phase 1 curricular components, ensuring alignment with program competencies and institutional goals Coordinate and support course directors and faculty in content delivery, scheduling, assessment strategies, and course evaluations Lead integration efforts across disciplines and sessions to promote a cohesive, longitudinal learning experience Serve as a liaison to the Office of Medical Education, contributing to curricular mapping, review processes, and LCME documentation Facilitate faculty development, onboarding, and mentorship within Phase 1 Collaborate with simulation, technology, and assessment leaders to support innovation in teaching and evaluation Teaching & Instruction Deliver instruction in one or more areas of expertise within the Phase 1 curriculum Model effective, student-centered teaching and evidence-based instructional practices combined with the ability to teach in the language of the Spirit and build faith in Jesus Christ Provide mentorship and academic guidance to medical students, including feedback and formative support Scholarship & Educational Innovation Engage in scholarly work related to medical education, teaching effectiveness, curriculum design, or discipline-specific research Present and publish findings at academic conferences and in peer-reviewed journals Contribute to a culture of faith, inquiry, evaluation, and continuous improvement in education and the pursuit of truth Service & Outreach Participate in curriculum and governance committees within the School of Medicine Represent Phase 1 interests in interdepartmental, cross-phase, and institutional meetings Support student engagement and outreach initiatives that align with the mission of BYU and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Serve as a role model of professionalism, covenant belonging, and Christlike leadership in academic and community settings Documents Required at the Time of Application: Please attach your updated curriculum vitae, cover letter and Mission Alignment Statement to the faculty application.
