Positions Purpose:
Under direction from the Tribal Chief of Police, Captain of Police, Lieutenant of Police and Police Sergeant, a Catawba Nation Tribal Police Officer will obey all lawful orders and be responsible for the enforcement of all laws and ordinances, department rules and regulations, orders, procedures, punctuality, and attendance, and ensure their own personal appearance. He/she will protect and serve residents, visitors, and employees of the Catawba Indian Reservation through the responsible enforcement of Catawba Nation Tribal Codes and applicable U.S. Codes, including federal laws, South Carolina state criminal statutes and York County Ordinances.
He/she will be a loyal and dedicated member of the Catawba Nation Police Department as well as bring integrity and honesty to the police profession. He/she will always conduct themselves in a manner that will enhance the public image of the Catawba Indian Nation whether on or off duty. Additionally, he/she will ensure an effective flow of communication throughout the Tribal Police Department, Tribal Administration, Executive Committee, General Council and the Tribal Community at-large in an effort to provide the highest level of policing services that build trust, confidence and transparency between the police and those they serve.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- He/she will respond to calls for service he/she is detailed to including but not limited to alarms (burglary, fire, panic), traffic collisions, criminal activity, enforcing tribal, federal state and county codes, assist injured or sick individuals, assisting motorists, securing buildings and property, escorting money and/or persons as necessary, and assisting other agencies as requested, all in a safe and expeditious manner.
- Will uphold and assist with maintaining all department, South Carolina Law Enforcement Accreditation, and CALEA standards implemented by the agency.
- Assure accurate preparation, completeness, review, and forwarding of reports and records.
- Will conduct preliminary and follow-up investigations by documenting facts and observations according to established procedures and training, interview victims, suspects and witnesses, generate investigative reports, maintain integrity of crime scenes as needed and direct traffic when appropriate.
- Will proactively police and patrol the Catawba Nation reservation and its associated properties, build rapport and trust with residents, visitors, and employees, develop crime prevention strategies for recommendation through the established chain of command, initiate crime prevention activities and participate in efforts to educate the public in crime deterrence and prevention strategies.
- Will review daily activity and incident reports completed by other officers as to be aware of activity occurring during previous shifts.
- Ensure the security and care of arrestees and obtain medical care when needed.
- Will cooperate with other divisions within the Catawba Indian Nation Government in matters of mutual interest.
- Will develop and maintain sound working relationships of mutual benefit with other federal, state and local agencies.
- He/she will ensure that all matters of a confidential nature are kept confidential and will report any knowledge of violations to their immediate supervisor.
- Will actively participate in various community engagement programs to build stronger community relationships and foster trust.
- Understand and incorporate the restorative justice model of community policing within their everyday duties and service to the community
- Attends and participates in staff meetings as requested by the Tribal Chief of Police.
- Will actively attend various functions, community events and other opportunities within and beyond reservation lands that would lead to relationship building and the development of trust and cooperation with tribal citizens.
- Will perform other duties as assigned by their Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain of Police and/or Chief of Police.

- Successfully Pass Background Investigation
- Successfully Pass Medical Examination
- Successfully Pass Psychological Examination
- Successfully Pass Polygraph Examination
- Successfully Pass a Physical Fitness Examination
- Valid South Carolina driver’s license in good standing
- No felony convictions
- No misdemeanor convictions that would restrict your ability to carry a firearm
- Must be willing and able to attend Basic Law Enforcement Training Academy (may require extended stay outside of South Carolina)
Desirable:
- Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) certificate
- College Coursework
- Ability to demonstrate self-restraint in challenging and/or difficult situations
- Ability to effectively communicate with a diverse population
- Ability to de-escalate tense situations using thorough communication skills
- Ability to analyze options and choose appropriate courses of action
- Excellent English written composition skills
- Ability to gather data and information and prepare accurate written reports
- Working knowledge of investigative techniques and evidence preservation
- Ability to accept constructive criticism
- Ability to maintain professionalism and composure
- Ability to understand and follow verbal directives and written directions
- Word processing skills
- Ability to successfully complete an annual physical abilities test
