ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Perform tasks associated with fire suppression, rescue and emergency medical services.
Maintain proficiency in and administer first aid and medical treatment during emergency medical calls.
Participate in training classes and drills, and study technical material on equipment operation, fire suppression, rescue, and fire prevention to improve or maintain an effective level of performance.
Participate in training classes regarding City ordinances and codes.
Once obtained, maintain department/state continuing education requirements.
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:
Maintain physical training.
Inspect, clean, and maintain apparatus, equipment, quarters, grounds, and hydrants.
Perform other duties as directed by supervisor.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
Understand the principles, practices, and methods of firefighting and fire prevention.
Understand local, state, and federal laws, regulations, and codes as applied to the fire service.
Understand the capabilities and limitations of modern firefighting equipment and apparatus.
Understand basic mathematical concepts.
Apply the Fire Department's Standard Operating Procedures and City of Arlington Personnel Policies.
Demonstrate ability to perform advanced life support emergency medical functions.
Communicate effectively orally and in written form.
Operate a variety of office equipment including, but not limited to telephone, fax, personal computer, printer, and calculator.
Lift 150 pounds weight and drag for 75 feet to simulate a rescue.
Maintain physical activity over prolonged periods of time, such as standing attacking a fire and kneeling and stooping in awkward positions.
Maintain composure in highly stressful situations.
Maintain physical fitness requirements as specified by Fire Department Administrative Procedures.
Work in an outdoor environment subject to extremes of temperature, inclement weather, and intermittent exposure to dust, fumes, and loud noise.
Work under unpredictable hazardous conditions such as suppressing a fire or responding to an emergency medical call.
Work above ground on roofs and ladders in excess of 100' in height, below grade in trenches and basements, and in confined spaces such as attics, crawl spaces, in or under vehicles, etc.
Qualifying Education and Experience:
Must be able to maintain the minimum eligibility requirements as outlined in the Civil Service Local rules.
Ability to obtain and maintain Texas Commission on Fire Protection Basic Structural Firefighter Certificate within 16 weeks of employment.
Must be able to obtain and/or maintain a minimum medical certification of an Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (previously known as Emergency Medical Technician Intermediate/EMT-I) Certificate as issued by the Texas Department of State Health Services and all pre-requisites to obtain the certificate.
Must successfully complete the physical fitness requirements as specified by the Fire Department.
Valid Texas Operator's License, Class C is required.
