Job Description
Under the supervision of the Chief Staff Attorney, performs responsible and administrative work in assisting the Circuit Court Judges in the research and review of law and fact for cases; reviews briefs submitted by counsel and researches the law in cases under advisement; writes memoranda in which the facts of cases are outlined and/or statutes are discussed; conducts on the spot research concerning evidentiary, procedural, or other questions that arise during the course of a trial; attends court and listens to arguments of counsel on various motions made on the day of the trial; reviews cases scheduled for trial; prepares summaries and advises judges of jurisdictional, procedural, and evidentiary problems concerning the individual cases; provides judges with copies of applicable statutes, rules and relevant cases; responds to telephone inquires by attorneys or other individuals concerning procedural matters; reviews court orders to determine whether they comply with statutory requirements.
Required Qualifications
VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONALREQUIREMENT:
Requires a Juris Doctorate degree.
EXPERIENCEREQUIREMENT:
In addition to satisfying the vocational/educational standard, this class requires a minimum of one year of attorney-level legal experience.
SPECIALCERTIFICATIONSANDLICENSES:
Requires a Commonwealth of Virginia Law License.
SPECIALREQUIREMENTS:
Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.
