What are the responsibilities and job description for the Safety Officer position at Fond du Lac Reservation?
General Summary:
Reports to the Risk Loss Manager of the Quality Assurance Department. The Safety Officer is responsible for ongoing development of environmental and safety guidelines, as well as routine inspection of the facilities to ensure that procedures and regulations are strictly followed. The Safety Officer assesses multiple facilities within the Fond du Lac Human Services Division (FDLHSD) and ensures that all departments understand the job hazards and safety precautions necessary.
Position Responsibilities:
- Develop and update department protocols regarding safety standards for patient, staff, and general public, including Emergency Action Plan for FDLHSD.
- Serve as a point of contact for all required Safety reports from FDLHSD programs and staff.
- Serves as the FDLHSD “designee” as outlined in the FDL Band’s Food Service Ordinance #10/93.
- Play a significant role in making sure all employees and patients FDLHSD facilities remain safe from potentially hazardous conditions.
- Develops a safety conscious culture by providing workforce education on first aid, emergency and safety procedures and regulations.
- Ensures all necessary records and reports are maintained in compliance with all applicable federal and state health and safety regulations.
- Oversee the measurement and sampling of hazardous materials, and removal of physical, biological, or chemical hazards.
- Investigate incidents and accidents to identify root causes and suggest future preventative measures.
- Appropriate work attire is required.
- Must attend all mandatory department trainings.
- Makes day-to-day decisions within the framework of the Risk/Loss team.
- Displays a responsive and professional manner in promptly responding to all requests, complaints, and problems.
- Recognizes that each employee is a representative of the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and is responsible for demonstrating courtesy, respect, and sensitivity to the needs of all others, including visitors and co-workers.
- Represents the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and Human Services Division in a positive and professional manner in the community.
- Required to maintain proper attendance including reporting to work on time in accordance with applicable policies.
- Maintains a clean and organized work area.
- Due to changes and modifications in the job from time to time, employees are required to be flexible and assume other responsibilities assigned by management as deemed necessary.
Physical Requirements:
- Normal physical requirements.
Position Qualifications:
- BA/BS in occupational health and safety or a related scientific or technical field, such as engineering, biology, chemistry or public safety management is required.
- Two years experience in evaluation, compliance and/or planning is required.
- Experience in occupational or environment health and safety preferred.
- Coursework in emergency management and administrative law is preferred.
- Computer skills and abilities are required to perform research and easily communicate with other agencies and organization both internally and externally.
- Training in emergency first aid is preferred.
- Public speaking and presentation experience are required.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing is required.
- Ability to work independently and establish priorities is required.
- Attention to detail and accuracy is required.
- Ability to establish professional and harmonious working relationships on all projects and with all parties involved.
- Subject to drug and alcohol testing in accordance with the Fond du Lac Reservation’s Personnel Policies.
- Subject to pre-employment and annual background checks.
- Travel is required.
