What are the responsibilities and job description for the Voucher Assistant position at Harris County?
Among several responsibilities, the MAC Office is responsible for timely reviewing and processing payment for attorneys who are eligible to receive appointments through the MAC Office. The MAC Office reviews and processes several hundred attorney vouchers per week. Under the supervision of the Program Administrator, the Voucher Assistant will assist with reviewing attorney vouchers to determine whether they satisfy approval conditions. Additionally, the Voucher Assistant will draft communication to attorneys as to voucher status, return attorney calls, and respond to attorney inquiries.
The Voucher Assistant will also act as a backup to administrative assistants and other front desk duties. The Voucher Assistant will also assist with office-critical functions such as maintaining attorney assignment calendars, office supply management, organization of meetings and conference calls, and interfacing with the public as well as contacts within the county for general purposes related to the MAC Office.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Review attorney vouchers to determine whether they satisfy approval conditions.
- Troubleshoot and respond to basic questions by attorneys in a timely manner regarding voucher submission process, procedures, and payment status.
- Assist with office-critical functions such as maintaining attorney assignment calendars, office supply management, organization of meetings and conference calls, and interfacing with the public as well as contacts within the county for general purposes related to the MAC Office.
- Serve as a backup to administrative assistants and other front desk duties.

Education and Experience:
- High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent from an accredited educational institution.
- Some college required.
- One (1) year of clerical experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Proficient in Windows software applications, Clerical experience using Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.

- An Associate or Bachelor's degree in Accounting.
- Experience with auditing records.
- Must possess effective oral/written communication and telephone skills for interacting with the public, court personnel, attorneys, judiciary, etc.
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills; presents a positive demeanor, works well with the public, including those detained in jails and prisons, and clients’ families and other staff.
- Skills in performing data entry/retrieval, documenting, reporting, multi-tasking, meeting deadlines, and working under pressure.
- Must have organizational, problem solving and basic mathematical computation skills.
- Basic computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office and JIMS programs are desired.
- Basic knowledge of local government services is desired.
- Preference may be given to multilingual applicants fluent in English and other languages, in particular Spanish.
Position Type and Typical Hours of Work:
Regular Part-Time
Monday - Friday
- Hours will be discussed during departmental interview.
- $45,000 - $55,000.00 Annually
- Depends on Qualifications
- Based on 26 Pay Periods
Work Environment:
This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
Employment may be contingent on passing a drug screen and meeting other standards.
