Nature of Work: As the second in authority on the Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) Survey Crew, the primary purpose of this position is to operate and maintain all the various conventional, electronic, and computerized survey instruments, equipment, and materials such as Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), digital levels, electromagnetic SUE equipment, and electronic total stations used to perform land surveying field operations. The surveys being performed include but are not limited to control establishment, topographic mapping, hydrographic surveys, construction stakeouts, baseline stakeouts, right of way stakeouts, SUE designation, and boundary surveys. The equipment used will include conventional and robotic total stations, Windows Mobile compatible data collectors with TDS Survey Pro, Carlson SurvCE, and Leica Geosystems surveying software, Survey Grade GNSS equipment for real time kinematic (RTK) or real time network (RTN) surveys, localizations, conventional post-processed static GPS sessions, as well as conventional and electronic levels. This position is responsible for keeping the field notes daily and transcribing this information into the final field book. This position is also required to perform all the duties of the field team leader in their absence, as well as other duties as assigned.

Education: Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
Experience: Five (5) years of experience in technical engineering related work in the areas of design, traffic, construction, materials testing, engineering surveys, maintenance, or planning.
Selective Qualification: Two (2) years of experience in field surveys, with the use of electromagnetic SUE equipment, total stations, digital and/or automatic levels, and data collectors.

Preferred Qualification:
The ideal candidate should have the following:
Experience working with: Experience with field calculators Laptop or desktop computers running Windows and the Microsoft Office programs such as Word, Outlook, Excel, and Access.
Proficiency in: Establishing traverse, route, and angle point locations and computing: traverse closure error and adjustment; simple, compound, and reverse curve elements, deflections, and offsets; inverse lengths and bearings; coordinate computations and conversions. Producing neat and legible field sketches in a survey book.
Equipment: Responsible for proper use of routine maintenance and periodic adjustment of all assigned survey and safety equipment.
Notes:
1. Applicants may substitute education in a civil engineering curriculum at an accredited college or university at the rate of 30 semester credit hours for each year of the required experience, up to a maximum of three years.
2. Applicants who possess an associate's degree in either Engineering, Construction Management or Surveying or Surveying Technology from an accredited community college, college or university are considered to have met two years of the five-year experience requirement.Candidate must possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the state of Maryland.
Special Requirements:
- Must be able to travel anywhere in the state, Monday through Friday.
- Physically capable of carrying equipment, routinely up to 50 lbs., climbing hills and rough terrain, swinging a maul or brush axe and being outdoors in all types of weather conditions.
