Job Title: Optometric Technician
General Description:
This position is located within the Chickasaw Nation Division of Health. The purpose of this position is to provide clerical, administrative and non-professional technical support to the optometrist. May require travel as required.
Supervision Received: Incumbent is under the direct supervision of the Optometry Services Manager.
Supervision Exercised: None
Supervision Essential Job Functions:
- Obtaining medical records as requested by the optometrist.
- Gathering and relaying medical information and documents as appropriate when coordinating patient care with specialists and/or reffering doctors.
- Coordinating all appointments scheduling or communicating appointment schedule with Medical Support Technicians.
- Assisting in the coordination of eye care with the CHR, Social Services, and other agencies or departments.
- Assisting optometry patients in navigating the Mediaw and Tribal Health Programs.
- Documenting patient demographic information in ey clinic record as requested by optometrist.
- Obtaining and documenting patients' review of sytems, medication list, pertinent family history, chief complaint, and HPI information.
- Performing preliminary tests such as glasses neutralization, visual acuity testing, auto-refraction, color vision testing, stereo-vision teting, cover test, intra-ocular pressure measurements, etc.
- Operating the Humphrey Visual Fields instrument, the Optical Coherence Tomographer, the pachymeter, iCare instrument, and the retinal camera.
- Giving patients basic instructions on how to perform and/or respond during preliminary and ancillary tests.
- Be familiar with the names and purpose of various ophthalmic medications.
- Be familar with and able to explain to the patients the eyeglasses program available to Chickasaw citizens.
- Triaging patients' symptoms over the phone or in person to determine if the patient needs to be seen urgently, etc.
- Performing basic eyeglasses repair and adjustments.
- Requisitioning supplies and equipment as needed for continued eye care services.
- Completing maintenance requests as needed for continued eye care services.
- Instructing rotating optometry externs on the policy and procedures of the eye clinic.
- Maintaining logs of eye clinic referrals.
- Completing periodic ( e.g. monthly) eye clinic reports as needed.
- All other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Required - Knowledge of general office automation software, such as personal computer. Required - Must maintain in strict confidence all information received on the job. Required - Resourcefulness and orginality are required in handling administrative duties as delegated to the position. Required - Must use ingenuity in solving problems as they occur and making recommendations to superior on policy matters. Required - Ability to communicate effectively with the public.
Education:
GED Required - High school diploma or GED required with higher education courses.

Training And Experience:
Preferred Experience (6 months - 3 years) - One year of experience in optometry health care office preferred. Minimum of two years in health care field with evidence of good customer service skill, or equivalent.
Licenses, Certifications, Other:
Preferred - Certified Paraoptometric Technician
Physical Requirements:
Required - Position entails extended periods of standing, sitting, and bending.
Work Environment:
Work is performed in a clinic environment. There is common exposure to contagious diseases. Occasionally may need to cover in satellite clinics. Light travel is required.
