General Description / Primary Purpose
This is work performing landscape maintenance duties including, but not restricted to trash collection, maintenance of indoor and outdoor public areas including courtyards, postal area, dumpster and Housing are proper.
Essential Duties
Job Function
Daily empty trash containers located in Housing areas, clean ash cans and empty. Maintain the courtyard by removing any trash or debris. Keep the dumpster/recycling area clean and maintained. Remove any trash or debris from the courtyards, stairwells in and around Housing Area. As directed, clean the outdoor cooking grills in and around the Housing Area. As directed, use the “leaf blower” to clean debris from the A/C units in Osprey Village. As directed, use the gas powered vacuum to maintain the courtyards and parking lots.
This position is designated as a Tier 2 respondent for designated campus emergencies and events. In the event of a declared campus emergency, the position incumbent will make every effort to return to campus when directed.

Weed Eating, Edging Asphalt, & Cement Surfaces
- Edge all sidewalks, borders, parking lots, curbs & other permanent turf-adjoining surfaces throughout campus
- Weed eat areas where no mower can reach
- Check for proper fluid levels & operation before each use

- Clean equipment when work is complete
- Possess the ability to carry a weed eater or blower for period of time
Plant Bed Maintenance
- Weed plant beds throughout the housing areas
- Rework soil in plant beds as needed by adding fertilizer, peat and other amendments
- Mulch plant beds
- Wear eye & hearing protection
- Trim trees & bushes properly
- Clean equipment when work is complete
- Possess the ability to carry a weed eater or blower for period of time
Equipment/Shop Maintenance
- Inspect the vehicle assigned and maintain proper records
- Follow required PM schedule
- Use assigned vehicle only in the performance of assigned duties
- Return assigned vehicle to maintenance area daily
- Assist in minor equipment adjustments and repairs
- Provide other service to equipment adjustments and repairs
- Assist loading/unloading/moving bags of fertilizer, pesticide & grass seed
Landscape Construction
- Operate a sod cutter or a vibrating packer, checking for proper fluid levels & operation before each use
- Use rake, shovels & other hand tools for finish grading work
- Plant trees & bushes, lays sod, & mulch beds
- Remove dead/dying/unwanted trees and plants
- Clean up debris when job is complete
- Possess the ability to control awkward powerful equipment when in use in uneven terrain

Required Qualifications

Knowledge of safe trash disposal techniques Knowledge of landscape maintenance techniques Knowledge of the procedures and methods used in proper tree maintenance Skill in safely and effectively operating riding mowers Skill in using supplemental landscape maintenance equipment such as power edgers, blowers, power hedge trimmers and the like Ability to use hand tools such as rakes, shovels, lopping shears, pole saws, leaf blower or gas powered vacuum and the like during landscape construction, modification, and maintenance Ability to lift and carry loads of 50 pounds or more (bags of fertilizer, bags of grass seed, sod and the like); to push or pull small equipment such as walk behind edger, mowers and blowers Ability to climb stair, bend or stoop in order to collect trash or debris Abilty to walk long distances on level and unlevel terrain while using equipment Ability to get on and off riding mowers, tricksters, and tractors quickly and with ease in cases of emergency Ability to understand University rules, regulations, policies, and procedures Ability to communicate information effectively, in English, both verbally and in writing Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others Ability to work outdoors in all types or weather and within extreme temperatures ranges Visual ability, corrected, to observe people and/or vehicle moving through the work area in order to redirect work or equipment to avoid injuires to the people or damage to the vehicles
