Position Overview
This position is responsible for managing daily operations for the engineering laboratories and machine shop, ensuring equipment functionality, safety compliance, and availability of materials. It involves collaboration with faculty, training and assisting students, supervision of student employees, and maintenance of equipment, inventory, and safety systems to support effective instruction and consistent safety standards across the Engineering program within the School of Science & Engineering.
What will I do in this position?
Essential job responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Manage daily operations of engineering laboratories and the machine shop, ensuring equipment functionality, supply procurement and availability, and adherence to safety standards.
- Collaborate with faculty to identify, acquire, and prepare equipment and materials for instructional laboratories and assist, as required, during scheduled sessions.
- Train and assist undergraduate students in the safe and effective use of laboratory and machine shop equipment.
- Perform routine maintenance, repairs, and semester preparation for laboratories and shop equipment, including safety systems like eyewash stations and fire extinguishers.
- Supervise student employees and manage laboratory access, equipment inventory, maintenance records, and safety permissions.
- Coordinate with other laboratory and shop technicians to maintain consistent safety protocols across the Engineering program within the School of Science & Engineering.
- Perform other duties as requested or assigned.

What will it take to succeed in this position?
Minimum Education and Experience:
- Associate degree in engineering or engineering technology, or a minimum of five (5) years of experience using and maintaining metalworking and machine shop equipment.
- Background in laboratory safety procedures and practices.
- Maintain a growing, personal relationship with Jesus Christ, reflect His character in all interactions, and faithfully uphold and embrace Northwestern’s mission, Doctrinal Statement and Declaration of Christian Community

- Written & Verbal Communication: Strong writing, editing, proofreading, and verbal communication skills.
- Flexibility: Willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends as needed.
- Background Check: Must pass initial and ongoing background checks as a condition of employment.
