Position Overview
Oversee the community of the residence hall to develop an interpersonal environment that maximizes growth in the lives of students attending the university. This includes both collective and individual attention to students’ overall well-being such that they are best situated to succeed and thrive both inside and outside of the classroom.

What will I do in this position?
Essential job responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- In partnership with other deans and directors in Student Life, actively pursue students who may be at risk for significant negative academic impact because of various life circumstances including mental, emotional and/or physical health needs in the collective effort to best resource them for academic success. Through one on one meetings, actively pursue students already determined to be at risk academically because of prior poor academic performance to both offer and reinforce relevant academic support services.
- Provide leadership to the facilitation of a Christian community environment that challenges and enables students to grow through integration of faith, living and learning; responsible to maintain a safe clean facility where residents are expected to behave in a mature/responsible manner in relation to their roommates/neighbors. Counsel students in the areas of personal growth involving academic excellence, spiritual enrichment and healthy social relationships.
In collaboration with the Associate Dean of Residence Life:
- Participate in the selection and training of Resident Assistants (RAs), Resident Development Assistants (RDAs) and Assistant Resident Directors (ARDs) through interviews, training, retreats and one-on-one support.
- Using the established Student Life Outcomes, create and implement a biblically-based, student leadership development curriculum that encourages persistence to graduation.
- Oversee an assigned team of Resident Assistants, Resident Development Assistants and an Assistant Resident Director through weekly team meetings and one-on-one meetings.
Supervise the Assistant Resident Director, ensuring the below responsibilities are handled:
- Scheduling and managing duty shifts and accountability of RAs on duty.
- Coordinate projects and tasks assigned to RAs on duty as directed by Student Life staff.
- Various administrative tasks including the collection and distribution of misc. paperwork (forms, rosters, surveys, evaluations, etc.).
- RA staff care including one-on-ones with RAs, providing general support and encouragement, and assisting in necessary discipline and/or accountability.
- Assist the Resident Directors and Deans with portions of student leader training.
- Assist the Resident Director and other Student Life staff in planning and implementation of various student leader events, including A-Train socials, Fall Residence Life all-staff socials, Debrief Retreat, etc.
- Assist Resident Directors with various tasks related to the management and organization of Residence Life specific offices, workrooms, storage areas, etc.
- Assist RDs, RAs, and Housing Office with various tasks related to housing, including check-in and check-out, signups, etc.
- Participate in the development, promotion, and facilitation of seminars, workshops, and educational programming ensuring relevance to student needs, issues, and concerns. Attend training sessions, staff retreats, and other relevant functions as requested by the Deans.
- Demonstrate administrative competence through efficient attention to student housing tasks, including assistance with and/or coordination of check-in and check-out, early and late arrivals, returning student sign-ups, and room changes. Ensure enforcement of policies related to student life (university, local, state, federal). Participate in student discipline procedures.
- RD is required to live in and rent housing in the UNW residence hall assigned. Maintain regular supervision duty schedule with other Resident Directors for weekdays, evenings and weekends.
- Abide by all University policies.

Secondary job responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Maintain awareness of maintenance repairs, directing students to proper maintenance personnel.
- Perform other department duties as necessary.
What will it take to succeed in this position?
Minimum Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in Counseling, Student Personnel Services, or related area is desirable
- Previous work experience applicable to the aforementioned responsibilities required
- Previous leadership experience directly related to residence life strongly preferred
- Continually nurture a personal relationship with Jesus Christ; serve as a consistent witness for Jesus Christ; maintain a kind, Christ-like attitude in dealing with and ministering to people within and outside of Northwestern; and faithfully uphold and embrace Northwestern’s mission, doctrinal statement, and Declaration of Christian Community.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to secure and maintain a current, valid driver’s license and automobile
- Ability to successfully cope with intrusions inherent to working and living in a university residence hall
- Ability to establish and maintain harmonious relationships with employees and students
- Ability to maintain a flexible schedule
- Ability to maintain confidentiality in areas of student(s) issues and information
- Ability to respond maturely and with a “level head” in crisis situations
- Ability to obtain and maintain necessary safety training (i.e., CPR, First Aid, etc.)
- Knowledge and understanding of basic computer skills
- Skill in areas of organization, helping skills, supervision, and programming
- Demonstrated ability to develop and manage the budget and financial resources commensurate with the position’s delegated level of responsibility
- Ability to reside in the residence hall.
- Understanding of and agreement with Northwestern’s Declaration of Christian Community and Doctrinal Statement is essential
- Ability to pass a background check upon hire and periodically throughout the course of employment
